在中文的成语学习中,我们难免会以字面意思来曲解成语本来的意思,比如:为人师表,理解
为“老师的名单表”;呆若木鸡,理解为“傻呆呆的像只木头做的鸡”,实际上庄子的意思是“目光
凝聚、纹丝不动、貌似木头的鸡,才是武林高手,根本不必出招,就令敌人望风而逃。”看来很多成
语的理解是要放到一定背景故事里去理解的。那么,我们在英语成语的学习中,是不是也会遇到同样
的问题呢?
我们来看这样一个英语成语English idiom: Where is your beef ? 嗯?是在问我的牛肉在哪
里吗?我没买牛肉啊......一身汗还是不知对方所云啊。原来此语是20世纪80年代广为流行的温迪连
锁汉堡店(Wendy’s chain of hamburger restaurants)的电视广告词。广告的内容是:在其他快餐
店用餐的老婆婆盯着大面包里的一小块牛肉,说出这句广告词:Where’s your beef? 之后此语经常
被引用于质疑内容的重点或好处到底在哪里。例句:Everyone at the office knows you’re
furious with me. Where’s your beef? 公司里每个人都知道你在生我的气。你到底在气什么?
英语成语2:Pay through the nose. 用鼻子来付钱?难道是原始社会,不用金鼻子交易?这
个故事发生在公元九世纪,丹麦攻占爱尔兰时,曾要求不论是农民或富人,都要交出为数不小的贡
金。若是有人不愿缴纳或是交不出来,就要付出鼻子被割掉的代价。
在现代英语中,这个短语通常用来指以比合理的价钱还要高出许多的金额来购买某物品。
所以,Ipaid through the nose for a fancy dress this afternoon. 不是“我今天下午用
鼻子买了一件时髦的连衣裙”而是“我今天下午花高价买了一件时髦的连衣裙”。
